In quite a humbling moment, we got our first email from a band, Mono in VCF. Let me first start off by saying there are moments when you hear a song and you immediately recognize it as new and unique and you can’t help but get excited at the prospect of listening to the full album. That being said, listen to the song Escape City Scrapers right now.

Based out of Tacoma, Washington, Mono in VCF describe their music as “psychedelic, cinematic and romantically dark.” Their description is pretty much spot-on. Their songs are full of so much atmosphere and have so many elegant layers that I found myself getting lost in each instrument and getting more out of each song after every listen. The haunting vocals, ethereal strings, intricate yet subtle drums and rhythms all seem to be softly placed with care in each song.

In their songs, it’s clear that Mono in VCF is heavily influenced by the “Wall of Sound” production technique developed by record producer Phil Spector. Briefly summarized, it involves the use of natural reverberation and echo to develop a distinct quality and gave a rich and complex sound compared to other mono recordings of the time. “VCF” stands for voltage-controlled filter, a feature on many Moog synthesizers. Drawing influences from composers David Axelrod, John Barry and Ennio Morricone, the band successfully manges to create a classic sound that pushes through modern music and yet be distinctly pop. I’ve found that many bands come close to achieving this but never quite capture it like Mono in VCF does.

They’re nearly done with their debut album, merely tying up loose ends now, and should be finished in August. They happen to be playing Bumbershoot Festival in September, so I would definitely recommend catching them if I could. You can buy your tickets here. You will definitely be hearing more about them.

All right so if someone were to ask me, “Hey Erick, what kind of sound would you like to hear in a band?” Well then I’d be forced to answer “They’d have to be a male/female duo. One of them would have to play drums and the other play piano or occasionally the organ. And finally they would have to meet and form in Kansas.” And what do you know! I come across Mates of State with Kori Gardner on vocals, electric piano, organ, occasional guitar and Jason Hammel on vocals, drum set, glockenspiel, and other various percussion. Read more about them here and then watch this video “Like U Crazy” which really shows many but not all sides of their sound.

I hate to compare them to other bands but some stuff reminds me of a more stripped down Stars, in a good way, and maybe a more lo-fi Postal Service, perhaps? Their latest album is Bring It Back which I definitely recommend checking out, especially if you like the dynamic between a male and female vocalist.

All right, so occasionally I will post about an artist which I may not particularly find that good but will admit they have a good song. I’m not sure if that makes sense. Anyway I came across this band, Meg & Dia, on youtube playing this incredibly sad song “Yellow Butterfly” apparentally written by Dia and Ian, otherwise known as the Yellow Butterfly Project. My apologies if that was confusing…just watch.

From Dia and Ian’s myspace:

Back in July of 05′ Dia and I decided we should hang out once more before she left town. She came to my house, (since I did not have a car or drivers license) and we found ourselves in my music room. She started playing this song on my piano and I asked her if we could record it. Dia worked out a structure, I followed along on drums, then added guitars and bass. It was recorded on some of the lowest quality recording equipment known to man, but I still think it came out fantastic! After we recorded it, we thought of a name for our project, made a myspace, and took a picture! And so it was, the Yellow Butterfly Project was born!!!

Myspace the Yellow Butterfly Project – if you want to hear the audio version. I think the live version is the way to go.

Official site and Myspace for Meg & Dia who you saw perform the song. They just released album last year Something Real.

So my opinion, whatever that may mean to you, is well… I wouldn’t go as far as to call them bad or generic, they just don’t appeal to my tastes. Check them out though, Meg & Dia, if they pique your interest.

Update - So the song is a bit indulgent and lyrics over-the-top perhaps? But damn it, I like it nonetheless. Also here’s the mp3 of the “studio” version, if you want it.

Ok so I keep reading about this chick everywhere and while I don’t understand french, this chick is actually quite fun to listen to. According to wikipedia “Her rise began when she heard the Girlfriend from the cheeky parisian hip-hop group TTC. Catching the girl-baiting lyrics that Cuizinier was spitting to have a pop back with the song ‘Short Dick Cuizinier’, which is now know as .” She has a full album to be released on September 3rd. And from the look and sound of it, it will be an electro-pop filled party. Video after the jump. Be warned though, sunglasses may be needed.

Nicole Atkins - Photo by Jeremy BaldersonThere are few artists that you instantly fall in love within the first few seconds of listening to them. Nicole Atkins and the Sea manages to do just that with the song “The Way It Is.” Jokingly self-described, in a Rolling Stone interview, as wanting “to sound like a girl group in a David Lynch movie” Nicole Atkins and her band the Sea sound almost exactly like that, if the remaining members of the girl group had died and she carries their souls in her sweeping, hypnotizing croon lightly backed by her band the Sea. More on her incredible sound and links after the jump.

Those funky Sweds never cease to amaze when it comes to music, found this gem on Last.FM. After the incredible second album Deep Cuts which includes the hit Heartbeats, comes We Share Our Mother’s Health from the album Silent Shout. This strange synthpop song has quite a funky beat and chilling vocals, especially when the male vocals come in half way. The music video is equally funky and slightly disturbing. Other greats by The Knife are Heartbeats, Silent Shout, Marble House, We Share Our Mother’s Health (Ratatat Remix) and Christmas Reindeer( which was released for free here. funkiest Christmas song you’ll find).

If you like this then maybe you’ll like: Hotchip, Ladytron, Royksopp and Goldfrapp. Video after the jump:

Praise be to the Digg for occasionally having an awesome music video, this was also how I discovered the bands Ok Go and Mute Math. Although this isn’t the official music video its a fun lip dub done by the crazy people over at Connected Ventures (my dream company I’d like to work for). Anyway the song is quite a fun song to listen to, quite pumped and has some great lyrics. The song is pumped most of the way through, dips into a more mellow tone then ends with the same energy it began with. Other great songs by Harvey Danger: Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Authenticity and Cream and Bastards Rise

If you like this then you may like: Scissors for Lefty, The Hives, Ok Go and possibly The Go! Team. More about the band and both videos after the jump.
