There’s something so unique about this song. I was going to wait to post about this but I can’t. There are so many parts to get lost in that you can just put it on and listen to the story it tells. The Fiery Furnaces are an “indie rock” band but that label really limits what they are producing with their sound. Though compared to The White Stripes early in their career, due to the garage blues sound in their songs, they’ve developed their own sound which can be described as experimental rural rock or maybe narrative indie. They’re really quite a unique band and aren’t afraid of being original.
In this song, much like their other songs, the backing tracks have a narrative aspect. In “The Philadelphia Grand Jury” the “long bassoon and altered tabla part could be heard as the singer waiting for the verdict from the jury.” Their new album is coming October 9th and I suggest you check them out on their site and stream a few songs.
